A

Active Coat

Active coat is an anti-bacterial paint finish used on some of our shelving products especially for medical applications.

Aisle

An aisle is the gap between rows of shelving. An aisle is often confused with the passage at the end of the shelving runs that is the gangway.

BS 5454:2000

BS 5454:2000 is a British Standard that sets outs recommendations for archive storage applications including shelving design recommendations.

Bay

A bay is a single unit of shelving. A bay is typically described by its size e.g. 1m wide x 2m high x 35cm deep.

British Standard Shelving

British Standard Shelving is an angle-post construction using nut and bolt fixings. British Standard Shelving is considered to be an old style construction that, although usually heavy duty, is inflexible for most applications and definitely unsuitable for archive applications.

Delta Shelving

Delta Shelving is a term referring to the form at the front of an upright describing the style and type of the shelving. A delta is a triangular edged, single sided upright style, as used on Canterbury Classic Mobile Shelving.

Double-Sided Row

A double-sided row is a collection of bays shelved and accessed from both sides. A double-sided row is also known as an island-row of shelving.

Double-Skin Shelving

Double-skin shelving is a style of shelving that uses a twin or two-piece side-wall construction and is used for more specific applications compared to single-skin shelving purposes (contact us for more details), e.g. Canterbury Avant-Garde Mobile Shelving.

Epoxy Powder Coating

Epoxy powder coating is a superior paint finish that is effectively baked on plastic to create a durable hard wearing finish.

F

Friction Drive

Friction drive is the term used to describe mobile shelving bases that rely on friction between the wheel and track for traction. Friction drive usually allows all-wheel connection for equal drive movement.

I

Infill-Floor

An infill-floor is a flooring system used between mobile shelving floor tracks to create a one-level flooring area without trip hazards.

Island Row

An island row is a collection of shelving bays shelved and accessed from both sides. An island row is also known as a double-sided row.

M

Mobile Shelving Unit

A mobile unit is a run of shelving (usually double-sided) mounted on a mobile base.

Mono-Track

Mono-track is an inferior mobile shelving base track system using only one rear-mounted guide rail and thin running track. (We do not supply this type of mobile shelving system, but do repair and upgrade them).

P

Positive Drive

Positive drive is a term used to describe mobile shelving bases with a cog and floor-mounted chain drive offering positive traction. Positive drive usually drives from one position only not equally throughout the base.

R

Raised Access Floor

Also known as a computer floors, raised access floors are typically found in offices. The flooring is a section of tiles raised by pedestals allowing cabling and other services to be hidden.

Rolled Edge Shelving

Rolled edge shelving is a term referring to the form at the front of an upright describing the style and type of the shelving. The rolled-edge creates a circular post edged, single sided upright style similar to the triangular delta style of the Canterbury Classic Mobile Shelving.

Row

A row is a collection of shelving bays together.

Single-Sided Row

A single-sided row is a collection of bays with one shelving side typically positioned against a wall.

Single-Skin Shelving

Single-skin shelving is a style of shelving that uses one-piece side-wall for the upright construction and is used for general purpose shelving applications, e.g. Canterbury Classic Mobile Shelving.

Static Unit

A static unit is a run of shelving in a block of mobile shelving that does not move. A static unit can be either single-sided or double-sided.
